Animal Memories: L.S. Quinarius

Gene had purchased L.S. (Little Smokey) with Smokey - her Mom ( dam). L.S. was still in the womb. An offspring of Quinarius (sire)- a show horse. Smokey and L.S. got to live together on our farm their entire lives, with Smokey passing at 33, and L.S. passing overnight (at 20).

We were taken aback by L.S. sudden illness and failure to recover. Something went off in her digestive system and despite several attempts to rid her of colic - and thousands of dollars in Vet bills, she succumbed. The Vets called her stoic. Saying most other horses would have passed much earlier. She ate little food for weeks. She kept trying to turn the corner - I thought she might come out of it. ...no treatment helped...maybe surgery - but there's was no way to tell and few people can afford that expense with a pleasure horse.

...trained L.S. through natural horsemanship ...rode her very little. She, as all our horses lead a life as similar to a wild horse as you will see - with a vast pasture. The only difference is they are given roomy shelter - and fed and watered like royal horses. So it is truly "the best of both worlds" of any living being.Farewell, L.S. "Bessy" - we will miss you...we see you with your Mom running the fields - in our hearts...

This is L.S. - above her Mom with the star marking on the right - the wild horses in the background.
The rest of the herd is feeling her death  - and you can feel they are keeping an eye out - for her.

Good Fortune

a friend of mine gave me this for good luck some 25 years ago.  In my previous post, I recognized good friends and the value they bestow on our lives.  Good fortune has played a role in my life as well.  Through struggles and despair,  I'm also grateful for the good fortune I have had in the fulfillment of my dreams.  A simple one.  Being able to own and care for horses.

This gift from a friend which we hung on the dairy barn years ago is a reflection of that!

This is June Royal, Starburst - a pony, and L.S. Quinarius in the foreground.

Jim Dandy close-up.  his eyes are puffy from allergies to some of the wildflowers in the pasture.
Jim Dandy rough housing in the early morning just out of the barn.  Another one ready to roll in the snow.  Horses like to roll over first thing out of the barn - one way they groom themselves.
June Royal showing signs of aging - gray on her face /coat
Smokey Boots, our oldest horse who died several years ago - see my Memorial post
Rosa Bonheur painting "The Horse Fair" hanging in the MET, my days in NYC from which I took inspiration and dreamt of having horses to care for.

Aminal Memories: Smokey Boots

Smokey Boots March 1978 - March 2012
She was born to Smokey's Flame (sire) and Miss Twister Boots (dam)
from OKLAHOMA.  She lived 34 years.  Gene purchased her at 19 having been bred to Quinarius -  her daughter , L.S. "Little Smokey" Quinarius was born.
They lived together as mother and daughter from 1998, witness to the strong bond they had the whole time.  This was very special and a rare event that most horse families are split apart.  L.S. and Smokey received a gift of togetherness!  Smokey died very quickly, just collapsed from a run in the front corral. Perhaps a stroke.  L.S. got to see her down and was able to know she had passed away.

This is my first loss of life among the equines, of old age, thank goodness.  Good fortune in every life bears the gift of longevity.  She lived beyond the average lifespan of a horse(25-30 years)... grazing and running up until her last day.  We fed her 2nd cutting hay when her teeth were not able to process hay as well, this was softer and she ate much more grain than the other horses.  We will miss you sweet horse!  We'll remember your independence and self confidence most of all.
