Year In Review:2014

Assisi
Perhaps the most beautiful creature on Earth for it's big eyes and streamlined body.
A deer fawn named Assisi:
and I have to thank Gene for helping me feed this baby on a regular basis - he was our rock, once again.

Sudden Storms:
Mother Nature always makes the greatest impact when she rears her ugly head.  Thankfully, most of the time we get the magnificent side of her.
In 2014, we fell victim of "straight line winds" topping 100 mph.

The amount of devastation on the land involved over 50 trees being uprooted.  This was in mid summer.  At years end, we are now only cleaning the debris of fallen trees and limbs.

These photos don't tell the whole story, but here they are:

Our Beauty - Assisi

...this is my last photo with Assisi. She was a wonderful insight into her species - a great joy for us to touch.  We miss her each day.  When I started to let her roam the Earth, I thought she was getting big enough, but not enough for her to leave us.  For awhile she would return each morning from a night of grazing.  Than one morning, no Assisi.  I cry for her, did she fall prey to something?  Gene said she saw her grazing with a doe.  We can only hope.

In summary, I must tell you, although many many deer appear, they really have the odds stacked against them.

I cant go into detail on all the hazards they face - it's too depressing.  Suffice it to say, they survive against all odds.  The next time you see a deer, say to yourself how beautiful and fragile, and how lucky you are to have touched one, if only with your eyes.  For they are one of God's greatest creations. Bless you Assisi...

Assisi: Week 12

She is free to roam off into the woods, and every morning she follows me up behind the house.  I am hoping she will get with another family -  a deer family.  She follows me around right now, but soon she will feel confident enough to stay on the pasture without us.
Sometimes she likes to help Gene in the Workshop!
The buddy system!!!

Assisi: Week 7

This fawn is in her 7th week - acting like a teenager - running all around - heading straight for the road and causing us to panic,  carousing in the gardens, altogether showing her fun and rebellious side!!!

Assisi: Week 4

Assisi is more active,  browsing in the pasture with the goats - she stays at a distance from them - they have horns afterall!

Assisi: Week 3

a young artist's rendering

she forages a little bit, drinks full bottles, and seems pretty comfortable
...we are looking forward to her being with her own kin

Assisi: Week Two

Soon we can reintroduce the fawn into the wild, partly because it is starting to browse!
Born Free...
It has been a nice experience to be with a deer - a rare privilege.

Assisi: Week One

Gene has taken to milking the fawn when I am not around - he takes to animal care naturally - as I do.

Anyway, animals bring us joy even as we do the tireless chores of mucking and bottle feeding (as the case of our first fawn - Assisi).

Assisi: Day One

Here in the Northeast, our "perfect" Spring weather days are rare and a long time coming.  This week, at last, we are getting fine weather.  Along with Spring, comes babies, lots of them - from birds to deer, to woodchucks, to cattle (calf), goats (kid), and sheep (lamb) - and deer (fawn).

Here is the first fawn I saw this Spring.
While I never interfere with nature - unknowingly I came upon this newly birthed fawn and her mother.  Unfortunately, this fawn would never see her mother again.  It became road kill - another statistic in the long list of animals killed on the road by people each day.  Sometimes you can avoid wild animals by using brakes... keeping ones peripheral vision in check.... and sometimes it is unavoidable - adding to the list of unfortunate events in our modern society.

The fawn will become part of our farm life.  That is, until she is strong enough to join the herd on our longstanding wildlife reserve of old growth forest behind our farmhouse..  Now, she'll house with the goats.  I have named her Assisi, in honor of St Francis - a caregiver of animals and the environment  - a lead we have tried to follow in the near and long term.

Caring for animals, a list which grows longer over the years, is a huge responsibility.  Of the many species on this Earth,  it is endearing to learn of the uniqueness of each and every creature.  We do our best to support a great quality of life for those in our charge.
